Speech intelligibility decline in individuals with fast and slow rates of ALS progression
نویسندگان
چکیده
Based on the slope of speech intelligibility decline, 54 individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) were classified as fast or slow bulbar disease progressors. Following group assignment, the course of speech decline was modeled separately for these two subgroups. Fast progressors were characterized by a three-phase progression pattern with intelligibility declining at a progressively faster rate within each phase. Slow progressors were characterized by a consistent rate of intelligibility decline and thus, a single phase progression pattern. The approach used to identify fast and slow progressors may be useful in the future for stratifying patients enrolled in clinical trials. The subgroupbased models of intelligibility provide an empirical basis for making predictions about the timing of speech loss and the impending need for assistive communication.

Tongue movements and their acoustic consequences in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
OBJECTIVE The relations between acoustic measures and their articulatory bases have rarely been tested in dysarthria but are important for diagnostic and treatment purposes. We tested the association between acoustic measures of F2 range and F2 slope with kinematic measures of tongue movement displacement and speed in individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and healthy controls spe...
متن کاملDifferential Effects of Velopharyngeal Dysfunction on Speech Intelligibility During Early and Late Stages of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
The detrimental effects of velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD) on speech intelligibility in persons with progressive motor speech disorders are poorly understood. In this study, we longitudinally investigated the velopharyngeal and articulatory performance of 142 individuals with varying severities of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Our goal was to determine the mechanisms that underlie the e...
متن کاملPredicting Early Bulbar Decline in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: A Speech Subsystem Approach
PURPOSE To develop a predictive model of speech loss in persons with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) based on measures of respiratory, phonatory, articulatory, and resonatory functions that were selected using a data-mining approach. METHOD Physiologic speech subsystem (respiratory, phonatory, articulatory, and resonatory) functions were evaluated longitudinally in 66 individuals with ALS...
متن کاملPredicting Speech Intelligibility Decline in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Based on the Deterioration of Individual Speech Subsystems
PURPOSE To determine the mechanisms of speech intelligibility impairment due to neurologic impairments, intelligibility decline was modeled as a function of co-occurring changes in the articulatory, resonatory, phonatory, and respiratory subsystems. METHOD Sixty-six individuals diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) were studied longitudinally. The disease-related changes in artic...
متن کاملSpeech intelligibility after repair of cleft lip and palate
Background: Intelligibility refers to understandability of speech; and lack of it can negatively affect children’s overall communication effectiveness. Children with repaired cleft lip and/or cleft palate (CL/P) may experience poor speech intelligibility. This study aimed at evaluating speech intelligibility in children with repaired CL/P who had not been referred to sp...
